It's been awhile but I am back. I have taken too long off and now I am ready to get back on the contradiction quest. I am going to try to add at least one contradiction each week.

Friday, April 17, 2009

When did God's people first know his a Lord?

Gen 2:4 TheseH428 are the generationsH8435 of the heavensH8064 and of the earthH776 when they were created,H1254 in the dayH3117 that the LORDH3068 GodH430 madeH6213 the earthH776 and the heavens,H8064

Gen 4:26 And to Seth,H8352 to himH1931 alsoH1571 there was bornH3205 a son;H1121 and he calledH7121 (H853) his nameH8034 Enos:H583 thenH227 beganH2490 men to callH7121 upon the nameH8034 of the LORD.H3068

Gen 12:8 And he removedH6275 from thenceH4480 H8033 unto a mountainH2022 on the eastH4480 H6924 of Bethel,H1008 and pitchedH5186 his tent,H168 having BethelH1008 on the west,H4480 H3220 and HaiH5857 on the east:H4480 H6924 and thereH8033 he buildedH1129 an altarH4196 unto the LORD,H3068 and calledH7121 upon the nameH8034 of the LORD.H3068

Gen 22:14 And AbrahamH85 calledH7121 the nameH8034 of thatH1931 placeH4725 Jehovahjireh:H3070 asH834 it is saidH559 to this day,H3117 In the mountH2022 of the LORDH3068 it shall be seen.H7200

Gen 22:15 And the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 calledH7121 untoH413 AbrahamH85 out ofH4480 heavenH8064 the second time,H8145

Gen 22:16 And said,H559 By myself have I sworn,H7650 saithH5002 the LORD,H3068 forH3588 becauseH3282 H834 thou hast doneH6213 (H853) thisH2088 thing,H1697 and hast notH3808 withheldH2820 (H853) thy son,H1121 (H853) thine onlyH3173 son:

Gen 26:25 And he buildedH1129 an altarH4196 there,H8033 and calledH7121 upon the nameH8034 of the LORD,H3068 and pitchedH5186 his tentH168 there:H8033 and thereH8033 Isaac'sH3327 servantsH5650 diggedH3738 a well.H875

I really hate wasting all this paper space but if I'm going to address the alleged contradictions, I'm going to list them as I find them. In the verses listed above, the focus of the point is the name "LORD". Here is the second half of the alleged contradiction.

Exo 6:2 And GodH430 spakeH1696 untoH413 Moses,H4872 and saidH559 untoH413 him, IH589 am the LORD:H3068

Exo 6:3 And I appearedH7200 untoH413 Abraham,H85 untoH413 Isaac,H3327 and untoH413 Jacob,H3290 by the name of GodH410 Almighty,H7706 but by my nameH8034 JEHOVAHH3068 was I notH3808 knownH3045 to them.

Here the focus is on the name "JEHOVHA". The contradiction is; when was God first known as the "LORD"? Here is the translation and meaning of the word "Lord".

H3068

יהוה

yeho^va^h

yeh-ho-vaw'

From H1961; (the) self Existent or eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God: - Jehovah, the Lord. Compare H3050, H3069.

Here is the meaning of the word Jehovah.

H3068

יהוה

yeho^va^h

yeh-ho-vaw'

From H1961; (the) self Existent or eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God: - Jehovah, the Lord. Compare H3050, H3069.

Ok. It is clear that the name "Lord" and the name "Jehovah" is the same word. So, when God said that he was not known as the "Lord" to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; why does the word "Lord" appear in the text with them in the book of Genesis?

Nowhere in the book of Genesis does anyone call God "Lord" or does God call himself "Lord". The book of Genesis had many writers. Moses did not write the book of Genesis. He only compiled it along with the other four books. Every time the name "Lord" appears in the book of Genesis, it is in the narrative; meaning that even though Moses did not write it, he did interject the narrative standpoint. The book of Genesis is written form a first person and a narrative viewpoint. without a doubt, people will bring up Gen 2:4.

WAIT! Here it says that they began to call upon the name of the "Lord". This proves that there is a contradiction. Here is my translation for all of you who are extreme scholars.

"In the days of 911 people began to call upon the name of the "President" of the United States of America. The President said this; "These people knew me by a different name before this time, (before he was elected) but you now know me as "President"."

This is the same story as the alleged contradiction and a real event which took place. The story I just told is made up, but the theme is the same. No contradiction, just people who want there to be so badly, that they will overlook the facts.

Was God pleased or displeased with creation?

Gen 1:31 And GodH430 sawH7200 (H853) every thingH3605 thatH834 he had made,H6213 and, behold,H2009 it was veryH3966 good.H2896 And the eveningH6153 and the morningH1242 wereH1961 the sixthH8345 day.H3117

Gen 6:5 And GODH3068 sawH7200 thatH3588 the wickednessH7451 of manH120 was greatH7227 in the earth,H776 and that everyH3605 imaginationH3336 of the thoughtsH4284 of his heartH3820 was onlyH7535 evilH7451 continually.H3605 H3117

Gen 6:6 And it repentedH5162 the LORDH3068 thatH3588 he had madeH6213 (H853) manH120 on the earth,H776 and it grievedH6087 him atH413 his heart.H3820

Here, the alleged contradiction is that God was pleased with his creation in Gen 1:31 and displeased with his creation in Gen 6:5-6. This doesn't require a lot of Hebrew lingo so I will not put you to sleep. Yea, right. If I'm going to drive a point, than I going to drive the point.

Let's look at Gen 1:31.

The words "very good" would be the part of this verse in question.

H3966

מאד

me'o^d

meh-ode'

From the same as H181; properly vehemence, that is, (with or without preposition) vehemently; by implication wholly, speedily, etc. (often with other words as an intensive or superlative; especially when repeated): - diligently, especially, exceeding (-ly), far, fast, good, great (-ly), X louder and louder, might (-ily, -y), (so) much, quickly, (so) sore, utterly, very (+ much, sore), well.

Basically the word "very" (me'o^d) means "without a doubt"

H2896

טוב

ṭo^b

tobe

From H2895; good (as an adjective) in the widest sense; used likewise as a noun, both in the masculine and the feminine, the singular and the plural (good, a good or good thing, a good man or woman; the good, goods or good things, good men or women), also as an adverb (well): - beautiful, best, better, bountiful, cheerful, at ease, X fair (word), (be in) favour, fine, glad, good (deed, -lier, liest, -ly, -ness, -s), graciously, joyful, kindly, kindness, liketh (best), loving, merry, X most, pleasant, + pleaseth, pleasure, precious, prosperity, ready, sweet, wealth, welfare, (be) well ([-favoured]).

Without a doubt, the word "good" (ṭo^b) means "good". So very good, 'nough said.

Now for the second half of the contradiction.

Here, God is a little upset at what humanity has become. This however, has nothing to do with the creation week. These verses are dealing with what wicked man has done with the creation. The fact that the creation was very good to God has no bearing on God's disappointment with man. Just because it "repented" God that he had made man, does not negate the fact that he was pleased with the creation. I can't see how people will even consider this a contradiction. Nevertheless, I cover it here to satisfy the hungry mouths of wolves.

Does God encourage reproduction or not?

Gen 1:28 And GodH430 blessedH1288 them, and GodH430 saidH559 unto them, Be fruitful,H6509 and multiply,H7235 and replenishH4390 (H853) the earth,H776 and subdueH3533 it: and have dominionH7287 over the fishH1710 of the sea,H3220 and over the fowlH5775 of the air,H8064 and over everyH3605 living thingH2416 that movethH7430 uponH5921 the earth.H776

Lev 12:1 And the LORDH3068 spakeH1696 untoH413 Moses,H4872 saying,H559

Lev 12:2 SpeakH1696 untoH413 the childrenH1121 of Israel,H3478 saying,H559 IfH3588 a womanH802 have conceived seed,H2232 and bornH3205 a man child:H2145 then she shall be uncleanH2930 sevenH7651 days;H3117 according to the daysH3117 of the separationH5079 for her infirmityH1738 shall she be unclean.H2930

Lev 12:3 And in the eighthH8066 dayH3117 the fleshH1320 of his foreskinH6190 shall be circumcised.H4135

Lev 12:4 And she shall then continueH3427 in the bloodH1818 of her purifyingH2893 threeH7969 and thirtyH7970 days;H3117 she shall touchH5060 noH3808 H3605 hallowed thing,H6944 norH3808 comeH935 intoH413 the sanctuary,H4720 untilH5704 the daysH3117 of her purifyingH2892 be fulfilled.H4390

Lev 12:5 But ifH518 she bearH3205 a maid child,H5347 then she shall be uncleanH2930 two weeks,H7620 as in her separation:H5079 and she shall continueH3427 inH5921 the bloodH1818 of her purifyingH2893 threescoreH8346 and sixH8337 days.H3117

Lev 12:6 And when the daysH3117 of her purifyingH2892 are fulfilled,H4390 for a son,H1121 orH176 for a daughter,H1323 she shall bringH935 a lambH3532 of the firstH1121 yearH8141 for a burnt offering,H5930 and a youngH1121 pigeon,H3123 orH176 a turtledove,H8449 for a sin offering,H2403 untoH413 the doorH6607 of the tabernacleH168 of the congregation,H4150 untoH413 the priest:H3548

Lev 12:7 Who shall offerH7126 it beforeH6440 the LORD,H3068 and make an atonementH3722 forH5921 her; and she shall be cleansedH2891 from the issueH4480 H4726 of her blood.H1818 ThisH2063 is the lawH8451 for her that hath bornH3205 a maleH2145 orH176 a female.H5347

Lev 12:8 And ifH518 she be notH3808 able to bringH4672 H3027 H1767 a lamb,H7716 then she shall bringH3947 twoH8147 turtles,H8449 orH176 twoH8147 youngH1121 pigeons;H3123 the oneH259 for the burnt offering,H5930 and the otherH259 for a sin offering:H2403 and the priestH3548 shall make an atonementH3722 forH5921 her, and she shall be clean.H2891

Some say that the contradiction is: God first blessed Adam and Eve telling them populate the Earth in Gen 1:28 then curses it in Lev 12:1-8 Any simple reading of Gen 1:28 will tell the reader that God's actions are just as one would think. He told them to populate the earth. (Have a bunch of babies and fill the earth.) That is straight and simple. In Lev 12:1-8; God is laying out the guidelines for a woman after child birth. The time after birth was given for the woman to go through the cleansing period which was thirty three to thirty six days. As luck would have it, that happens to be about the same time as the average menstrual cycle of a woman today (28 days). God was given time after birth for the woman to have one menstrual cycle before resuming her normal life functions. Neither verse has anything to do with God cursing reproduction. In fact, God blessed it and then giving simple instructions on what to do afterwards. Some would ask, Why did God not tell Adam and Eve the same thing? Who says He didn't?

I don't know why anyone would see this as a contradiction; but there it is. Some people strain at gnats and swallow camels. Anyway, on to the next one.

When did God make the birds, trees, plants and animals?

Gen 1:11 And GodH430 said,H559 Let the earthH776 bring forthH1876 grass,H1877 the herbH6212 yieldingH2232 seed,H2233 and the fruitH6529 treeH6086 yieldingH6213 fruitH6529 after his kind,H4327 whoseH834 seedH2233 is in itself, uponH5921 the earth:H776 and it wasH1961 so.H3651

Gen 1:12 And the earthH776 brought forthH3318 grass,H1877 and herbH6212 yieldingH2232 seedH2233 after his kind,H4327 and the treeH6086 yieldingH6213 fruit,H6529 whoseH834 seedH2233 was in itself, after his kind:H4327 and GodH430 sawH7200 thatH3588 it was good.H2896

Gen 1:26 And GodH430 said,H559 Let us makeH6213 manH120 in our image,H6754 after our likeness:H1823 and let them have dominionH7287 over the fishH1710 of the sea,H3220 and over the fowlH5775 of the air,H8064 and over the cattle,H929 and over allH3605 the earth,H776 and over everyH3605 creeping thingH7431 that creepethH7430 uponH5921 the earth.H776

Gen 1:27 So GodH430 createdH1254 (H853) manH120 in his own image,H6754 in the imageH6754 of GodH430 createdH1254 he him; maleH2145 and femaleH5347 createdH1254 he them.

Here the contradiction is; when did God make the trees? Was it on day three like Gen 1:1-3 says or on day six like Gen 1:26-27 says? I don't plan on spending a lot of time with some of these contradictions because they don't need it. This is one of those times. The account in Gen:1-3 IS when the trees were made. The account in Gen 1:26-27 is the events taking place in the Garden of Eden. Here, God Made these trees just for the garden. The rest of the world was already full of trees. The Bible says that God made the Earth to be inhabited, not desolate. The events taking place in the Garden of Eden, for the most part pertain to that region of Eden only. All will be reviled in sort time. On to the next contradiction.

These are the same question all with different subjects. Trees, birds, and all other animals, plants and all other life were made before man. In the Garden of Eden these things where made again for Adam to name them. Also for Adam to see that he was unique among creation and that he was alone. And yes I know that birds were made from the water on day four and out of the ground in the garden on day six. This not a problem for God. He can make them out of silly putty if he wants. The point is that all of these things where made before man and the events taking place in the garden are confined to the garden, having nothing to do with the rest of creation.

Was light created on day one or day four? Is the Bible wrong?

THE BIBLE

CONTRADICTION OR COMFERMATION

In chronological order these are the alleged contradictions listed by those who are set on discrediting the Bible. We will start at the book of Genesis.

1a. Gen 1:3 And GodH430 said,H559 Let there beH1961 light:H216 and there wasH1961 light.H216

Gen 1:4 And GodH430 sawH7200 (H853) the light,H216 thatH3588 it was good:H2896 and GodH430 dividedH914 H996 the lightH216 fromH996 the darkness.H2822

Gen 1:5 And GodH430 calledH7121 the lightH216 Day,H3117 and the darknessH2822 he calledH7121 Night.H3915 And the eveningH6153 and the morningH1242 wereH1961 the firstH259 day.H3117

1b. Gen 1:14 And GodH430 said,H559 Let there beH1961 lightsH3974 in the firmamentH7549 of the heavenH8064 to divideH914 H996 the dayH3117 fromH996 the night;H3915 and let them beH1961 for signs,H226 and for seasons,H4150 and for days,H3117 and years:H8141

Gen 1:15 And let them beH1961 for lightsH3974 in the firmamentH7549 of the heavenH8064 to give lightH215 uponH5921 the earth:H776 and it wasH1961 so.H3651

Gen 1:16 And GodH430 madeH6213 (H853) twoH8147 greatH1419 lights;H3974 (H853) the greaterH1419 lightH3974 to ruleH4475 the day,H3117 and the lesserH6996 lightH3974 to ruleH4475 the night:H3915 he made the starsH3556 also.

Gen 1:17 And GodH430 setH5414 them in the firmamentH7549 of the heavenH8064 to give lightH215 uponH5921 the earth,H776

Gen 1:18 And to ruleH4910 over the dayH3117 and over the night,H3915 and to divideH914 H996 the lightH216 fromH996 the darkness:H2822 and GodH430 sawH7200 thatH3588 it was good.H2896

Gen 1:19 And the eveningH6153 and the morningH1242 wereH1961 the fourthH7243 day.H3117

Here the contradiction is; which day was light created on? Was it on day one like Gen 1:3-5 says or day four like Gen 1:14-19 says? In truth, the question is misleading from the beginning. "Light" was not created. Not here anyway. The word "light" in the Hebrew is "ore" which means luminary. However, the real emphases should be on "let there be" in the Hebrew "haw-yaw' "

H1961

היה

ha^ya^h

haw-yaw'

A primitive root (compare H1933); to exist, that is, be or become, come to pass (always emphatic, and not a mere copula or auxiliary): - beacon, X altogether, be (-come, accomplished, committed, like), break, cause, come (to pass), continue, do, faint, fall, + follow, happen, X have, last, pertain, quit (one-) self, require, X use.

Nowhere in the definition does it mention the word created or "bara" in the Hebrew. It only mentions that it is brought forth from something or somewhere. nevertheless, the issue is when was the earth lit? Gen 1:3-5 says the this light had to be separated from the darkness. So when light was brought forth, it was mixed with the "darkness" when the darkness was created or what it is, is still a mystery to me out side of the clear fact that it's dark. Interestingly, the word for day "yom" or here "yome" firstly means "hot". So God separated the hot form the not hot "darkness".

H3117

יום

yo^m

yome

From an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours), whether literally (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figuratively (a space of time defined by an associated term), (often used adverbially): - age, + always, + chronicles, continually (-ance), daily, ([birth-], each, to) day, (now a, two) days (agone), + elder, X end, + evening, + (for) ever (-lasting, -more), X full, life, as (so) long as (. . . live), (even) now, + old, + outlived, + perpetually, presently, + remaineth, X required, season, X since, space, then, (process of) time, + as at other times, + in trouble, weather, (as) when, (a, the, within a) while (that), X whole (+ age), (full) year (-ly), + younger.

Genesis 1:2 says that God "hovered" or "moved" over the face of the waters. The word hovered in the Hebrew "raw-khaf'" means to shake or flutter,

H7363

רחף

ra^chaph

raw-khaf'

A primitive root; to brood; by implication to be relaxed: - flutter, move, shake.

So the Spirit of God literally shook or vibrated over the face of the waters. As basic science supports, any form of movement is a form of friction which creates heat. Knowing that the word day "yome" means hot; this puts the events told in Gen. 1:2 into a whole new light. No pun intended. So the friction of the moving spirit of God caused heat upon the face of the earth. It is to be noted that this step in the creation account is very important for one reason that on the next day the dry land would appear followed by the plant life which would need that heat to survive in the depth of space sense God had not created the sun as of yet. Do not forget that even though there was heat in the "day" there was clearly a true light, this is implied by the clear definition of the word light or "ore" meaning luminary or illumination.

I believe that not only was there a natural state in which light was introduced; but as well the core of the earth had been started. This internal heat source would also be the workhorse which would start the earth's rotation. As is believed by science, the core has two parts. The inner and the outer, which spin in opposite directions of one another. Thus starting the rotation and magnetic of the earth. Whether or not there was a visible light in Gen 1:2 or not is irrelevant. However, the word "ore" would imply that as well. So in conclusion, The origin of light on earth has nothing to do with the sun. In fact, the sun is somewhat different. Let's now look at Gen 1:14-19 a little closer.

Here we will look at the word "lights". In the Hebrew "ma^'o^r ma^'o^r me'o^ra^h me'o^ra^h"

H3974

מארה מאורה מאר מאור

ma^'o^r ma^'o^r me'o^ra^h me'o^ra^h

(1,2) maw-ore', (3,4) meh-o-raw'

From H215; properly a luminous body or luminary, that is, (abstractly) light (as an element); figuratively brightness, that is, cheerfulness; specifically a chandelier: - bright, light.

As you can see from the definition that the word lights is not the same as the word light in Gen1:1:2. Not only is it a different word it has a different meaning. Here, the word lights or (ma^'o^r ma^'o^r me'o^ra^h me'o^ra^h) is referring to a "body". This definition was not given for the first use of light in Gen.1:2. So here, you can see that the Sun is just an embodiment of some sort hand has nothing to do with when light was created. It's basically a light bulb.

Since I know there are those who will say "Wait, what about the moon? It's not a light bulb!" we will look at that now.

Here, our point of discussion is the "lesser light". Yes the Sun and the Moon are both bodies of sorts. Here is the definition of the lesser light.

H6996

קטן קטן

qa^ṭa^n qa^ṭo^n

kaw-tawn', kaw-tone'

From H6962; abbreviated, that is, diminutive, literally (in quantity, size or number) or figuratively (in age or importance): - least, less (-ser), little (one), small (-est, one, quantity, thing), young (-er, -est).

From this first definition, we can see that this lesser light is smaller in size. That fits the Moon. Let's look at the next definition. This time the word "night".

H3915

לילה ליל ליל

layil le^yl layela^h

lah'-yil, lale, lah'-yel-aw

From the same as H3883; properly a twist (away of the light), that is, night; figuratively adversity: - ([mid-]) night (season).

So you can seen here that the Moon was not only smaller it was the way that twisted or "reflected" the light. This is exactly what the Moon does. Anyway, enough time on this. Let's move on to the next contradiction.
